What are dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs are an upright-limbed reptile lineage that originated in the Late Triassic. Non-avian dinosaurs disappeared 66 million years ago, but birds are living dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs are not every prehistoric reptile. Flying pterosaurs and marine plesiosaurs or ichthyosaurs belonged to separate lineages. Nor were all dinosaurs gigantic: the group ranged from small feathered animals close to birds to the largest land animals in Earth history.

When did dinosaurs live, and how did they evolve?

Dinosaurs did not dominate immediately. They began as one reptile group among many, radiated after the end-Triassic extinction, and diversified into sharply different body plans and ecological roles through the Jurassic and Cretaceous.

How did dinosaurs go extinct?

The scientific consensus is that environmental consequences of the Chicxulub asteroid impact eliminated every non-avian dinosaur lineage 66 million years ago.

Dust and aerosols reduced sunlight, disrupted climate and rapidly destabilised terrestrial and marine food webs. Two qualifications matter: dinosaurs were still diverse before the impact, and Dinosauria did not vanish completely because birds carried one branch forward.
