What was Sarcosuchus?
Sarcosuchus was a giant long-snouted crocodyliform that lived beside Early Cretaceous rivers in northern Africa and probably exceeded nine metres in the largest known adults.
It was not a modern crocodile enlarged to movie scale. Its skull, armour and vertebrae establish a specialised extinct branch, while the often-quoted twelve-metre length is an upper extrapolation rather than a complete measured skeleton.
