Animals That Survived Mass Extinction: Lineages & Evidence
Published · Editorial policy
The short answer
Birds, mammals, turtles and crocodilian lineages survived the end-Cretaceous crisis. Survival concerns particular lineages across a dated boundary, not unchanged modern species.

| Lineage | Event discussed | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Birds | End-Cretaceous | Some branches survived; many vanished |
| Mammals | End-Cretaceous | Survival was followed by later diversification |
| Turtles and crocodilian lineages | End-Cretaceous | Not every species crossed the boundary |
| Lystrosaurus | End-Permian context | Separate boundary survivors from later recovery species |
Which extinction are we talking about?
The end-Permian crisis and the end-Cretaceous asteroid crisis happened at different times and affected different communities. A claim that an animal survived must identify the event and the taxonomic level. A family may cross a boundary even while many of its species disappear.
Birds, mammals and reptiles at the end of the Cretaceous
Living birds preserve a dinosaur branch that crossed the extinction boundary. Mammal, turtle and crocodilian lineages also continued. This does not mean all members of those groups escaped: survival was selective, and modern species are descendants with their own subsequent evolutionary histories.
Surviving is different from recovering
Fossils from the first million years after the K–Pg boundary document changing mammal, reptile and plant communities. A species that appears in recovering ecosystems is not automatically the species that crossed the catastrophe itself. This distinction also matters for Triassic animals linked from the Permian survivor guide.
Why a familiar body shape is not proof
Similar-looking fossils can belong to different species, and rounded date ranges can hide gaps near a boundary. The atlas Lystrosaurus record concerns L. murrayi; it should not be relabelled as a proven boundary-crossing species. Check the linked Permian guide for the distinction from L. curvatus and the cited stratigraphy.
What remains uncertain
Survival mechanisms differ among lineages and environments. Small size, diet or aquatic habits can be hypotheses to test, not a universal rule that guarantees survival.
Related questions
Did all dinosaurs die out?
Non-avian dinosaurs disappeared, but birds carried one dinosaur lineage forward.
Are modern crocodiles unchanged survivors?
Their broader lineage survived; that does not mean modern crocodile species existed unchanged at the boundary.
