Could T. rex Swim? Evidence and Scientific Limits

Published · Editorial policy

The short answer

T. rex may have been able to swim, but its performance is uncertain. A buoyancy model supports floating with its head above water; that does not establish swimming speed, endurance or underwater hunting.

Could a T. rex float?

Henderson’s 2018 study tested reconstructed bodies with lungs, air sacs and varying tissue densities. Its T. rex model floated with the head clear of the surface. This is a physical feasibility test: the result depends on the reconstruction and does not record an animal moving through water.

Do swimming dinosaur tracks prove T. rex could swim?

An Early Cretaceous trackway in Spain preserves claw traces interpreted as a theropod touching the bottom while swimming. It supports swimming in some theropods. Its age and unidentified trackmaker prevent us from assigning that behaviour directly to Tyrannosaurus rex.

Was T. rex an aquatic predator?

The Natural History Museum describes T. rex as a terrestrial carnivorous dinosaur from western North America. Moving through water and specialising in aquatic hunting are different ecological claims. A river crossing would not, by itself, make an animal a diving predator.

How should a swimming reconstruction be read?

Treat a swimming scene as an interpretation. Ask whether it depicts buoyancy, propulsion or a specific hunting behaviour, and which source supports each part. The cited flotation model and trackway answer different questions; combining them cannot supply a measured T. rex swimming speed.

What remains uncertain

The sources here support a plausible ability to enter and move through water, not a verified swimming speed, maximum distance or routine aquatic lifestyle.

Related questions

How fast could T. rex swim?

These studies do not establish a T. rex swimming speed. A floating model cannot provide a reliable mph or km/h value for active swimming.

Were the Spanish swimming tracks made by T. rex?

No. They come from an earlier Cretaceous setting and are attributed to a theropod, not to T. rex.
