How big was Smilodon fatalis?

La Brea skeletons show substantial individual variation. Many adults fall within large-cat mass ranges, but a deep chest, heavy forelimbs and short tail made the silhouette more compact than a lion.

How long were the saber teeth?

Upper canines grew continuously during youth and were flattened side to side, with fine serrations. They were effective puncturing tools but more vulnerable to sideways bending than the conical canines of living cats.

How could the jaws clear such long teeth?

A lowered jaw joint, modified mastoid region and flexible neck allowed a much wider gape than in living big cats. Bite force at the canines was not exceptionally high; neck and forelimbs likely helped position prey.

Why were the forelimbs so robust?

Broad attachment sites and thick bones indicate powerful muscles for grappling and stabilising prey. The hindlimbs were less specialised for prolonged high-speed pursuit than those of open-country cats.

What did the short tail change?

A short tail provided less counterbalance during sharp high-speed turns. Combined with its heavy build, it supports close-range ambush and restraint rather than cheetah-like chasing.

What did Smilodon really look like?

It was a distinct sabre-toothed cat: compact, deep-chested and muscular, with large forequarters and a short tail. Fur colour, mane-like features and exposed-lip posture are not preserved.
